![]() Campaign News Campaign News is a collection of published articles and photographs, mostly Free Lance newspaper Letters to the Editor and Community Forum pieces, about the San Benito County Supervisoral race in District 1 between incumbent Richard V. Scagliotti and challenger Roseline Gidget Crisafulli. Believe it or not, a complete collection is here, not just those articles favorable to Gidget Crisafulli. Gidget certainly does things differently! Note: All writers are known to the Crisafulli Campaign except Mr. Diaz. Election signs don't fit in with colors of spring By Larry Slonaker, Mercury News Staff Writer ![]() ![]() Source: San Jose Mercury News, March 14, 2000, Page B1 But it's not like voters suddenly were treated to a meaty campaign, anyway. For example, the Crisafulli-Scagliotti battle had very little airing of substantive issues, and lots of dark accusations about who was and wasn't a stooge of the developers. Don't be surprised if Scagliotti carries residual bitterness toward some high-profile local business people. One member of the local Business Council, Bob Bianchi, was treasurer of Crisafulli's campaign. Please do not disparage hard working, honest citizens By Dr. Lisa Udell ![]() ![]() Source: The Pinnacle Newspaper, March 9, 2000, Page A8, Letters To The Editor I read the Pinnacle whenever it arrives in my post office box here in San Juan. Occasionally, I have reacted to something said by either Richard Lusink or Bob Valenzuela. However, this time my reaction has caused me to write to the paper. I was genuinely annoyed when Mr. Lusink belittled Gidget Crisafulli in his column stating that, "Gidget Crisafulli appears to be involved in many social clubs; but unfortunately social success doesn't make leaders." This is simply not the truth. Scagliotti wins fourth term By Kate Woods, Pinnacle Correspondent ![]() ![]() Source: The Pinnacle Newspaper, March 9, 2000, Page A1 After a grueling race in which both candidates accused the other of being "pro-development," Supervisor Richard Scagliotti narrowly retained his county seat after winning a majority of North County District 1 votes from challenger Gidget Crisafulli. Scagliotti appeared enthusiastic and optimistic after the polls opened Tuesday when, at the Supervisors meeting, he passed out red lollipops emblazoned with "Vote" on the candy and, on the stick: "Vote for Richard Scagliotti, District 1" Place, Kesler gear for runoff; Scagliotti heads off challenge By Larry Slonaker, Mercury News Staff Writer ![]() ![]() Source: San Jose Mercury News, March 9, 2000, Page B1 San Benito County voters resolved one contentious race Tuesday, but a second contest that promises to be full of conflict is only getting started. In District 1, three-term incumbent Richard Scagliotti held off a challenge by Hollister businesswoman Roseline "Gidget" Crisafulli, winning about 54 percent of the vote. Supervisor defeats Crisafulli by 161 votes By Jed Logan - Assistant Editor ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance Newspaper, March 8, 2000, Page A1 In what was probably the toughest race of his political career, Supervisor Richard Scagliotti retained his seat on the county Board of Supervisors by defeating challenger Roseline Crisafulli Tuesday. In one of the most closely contested races of the primary season, Scagliotti rode to victory with 1,220 votes (53.3 percent) to Crisafulli's 1,059 votes (46.3 percent), according to the unofficial totals from the San Benito County Elections office. Scagliotti, Place lead races By Larry Slonaker, Mercury News Staff Writer ![]() ![]() Source: San Jose Mercury News, March 8, 2000, Page B1 Richard Scagliotti, the three-term San Benito County supervisor who faced a spirited challenge from Hollister businesswoman Roseline "Gidget" Crisafulli, was running slightly ahead in early returns Tuesday night in the race for the District 1 seat. Scagliotti was edging in front of Crisafulli with about a 10-9 ratio, but there were more ballots yet to count. The top choices on election day Editorial ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance Newspaper, March 6, 2000, Page A4 This is one of the most-watched races in the primary election because a winner will be selected. Challenger Roseline "Gidget" Crisafulli is vying to replace incumbent Richard Scagliotti, who has been on the Board for 12 years. Both candidates offer exceptional qualities to fill the position, from experience to knowledge to energy, but we believe Crisafulli would do the best job. Positions on growth are at issue in races for supervisor seats By Larry Slonaker, Mercury News Staff Writer ![]() ![]() Source: San Jose Mercury News, March 3, 2000, Page B1 Voters in Tuesday's election might be excused for being confused over the two contested races for San Benito County Board of Supervisors. Candidates have characterized their positions one way, only to have opponents claim the opposite. The result has been a sometimes rancorous campaign for positions that could alter the nature of the board's majority, which recently has shown preference for a drastic slowdown in growth. They like their supe By Web and Birgit Winans ![]() ![]() Source: The Pinnacle, March 2, 2000, Page A9, Letters To The Editor Having lived in Supervisorial District One for 34 years, we are very interested in all comments made concerning the two candidates. For the past 10 years we have observed Richard Scagliotti in action on the Board. We have watched him take the County through both good and bad times, not an easy job to say the least. District 1 challenger offers fresh outlook for Board By Jed Logan - Assistant Editor ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 28, 2000, Page A1 Hoping to breathe new life into the county's decision-making process, businesswoman Roseline "Gidget" Crisafulli has entered the race for a seat on the San Benito County Board of Supervisors. Crisafulli, 53, is running against incumbent Richard Scagliotti, supervisor for District One who has held the seat for the past 12 years. Incumbent brings years of experience to position By Jed Logan - Assistant Editor ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 28, 2000, Page A1 Putting to use his 11 years of experience to help protect the county's way of life is what has Richard Scagliotti running for re-election to the Board of Supervisors. Scagliotti, 46, said he wants to remain as the District One representative to help stave off pressures from northern developers and agencies looking to use San Benito County as a bedroom community and dumping ground. Crisafulli will do what is best for residents and the future of children By Sylvia Sims ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 28, 2000, Page A4, Letters To The Editor As a San Benito High School Board member, I have had the pleasure of working with Roseline "Gidget" Crisafulli. She is extremely positive and takes her position as president of the Board very seriously. At times decision-making can be difficult, when realizing that the outcome greatly effects the students and staff, as well as their families. Candidate Crisafulli displays dedication to improve community By Diane Gibbs ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 25, 2000, Page A5, Letters To The Editor Twelve years ago I met Gidget Crisafulli. At that time we both had one goal in mind and that was to make the next four years for high school band students memorable. Looking back I had no idea that this would become a 365-day commitment nor did I realize that without Gidget, "memorable" would have had little meaning. No penny pinching when a life is at stake By Leonard J. Poletti ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 25, 2000, Page A5, Letters To The Editor May I suggest to District 1 voters to seriously consider the candidacy of Richard V. War of the words on in County Supervisors' Race By Kate Woods, Pinnacle Correspondent ![]() ![]() Source: The Pinnacle, February 24, 2000, Page A1, Election 2000 Scagliotti of District 1 on the county's north end is up against Gidget Crisafulli, who owns Autoline Collision of Hollister. Bob Cruz is running unopposed in District 3. The new political face in the race is Roseline "Gidget" Crisafulli. She bills herself as "a parent, business owner, and participant in a wide range of community organizations." Like all other local candidates, she is grabbing the growth issue in her quest to unseat the two (sic) term Scagliotti. Candidates for the Board of Supervisors to state their position By Kate Woods, Pinnacle Correspondent ![]() ![]() Source: The Pinnacle, February 24, 2000, Page A4, Election 2000 The Pinnacle asked candidates for the Board of Supervisors to state their position on a number of issues facing the county. As with most of San Benito County, growth is the focus for District 1, which covers northern and northeastern sections of the county. Roseline "Gidget" Crisafulli is challenging incumbent Richard V. Funding for the candidates By Jed Logan - Assistant Editor ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 11, 2000, Page A1 However, in the supervisor race for District One, raising money has not been the primary objective. Challenger Gidget Crisafulli has raised $952.75 for her campaign, with most of that spent between paying for a television advertisement and campaign literature. Incumbent Richard Scagliotti has spurned the thought of accepting donations in favor of using $2,941 of his own money to pay for signs and campaign materials. Scagliotti - Doing what is right for San Benito County By Joe Paul Gonzalez ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 21, 2000, Page A4, Letters To The Editor It has become painfully obvious to me that there is a concerted effort by certain interested parties to discredit Supervisor Richard Scagliotti. There is no question that these personal attacks are aimed at sinking his campaign for re-election in District One. Business council only has its own business interests at heart, not the peoples' By Richard E. Lusink ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 18, 2000, Page A5, Letters To The Editor I would like to comment on a Community Forum published on Feb. 4 and written by a local CPA Bob Bianchi which I'm not sure whether the newspaper used the word chameleon or Mr. Bianchi chose that word himself. In any event it basically means that which changes color or leopard spots, etc., but apparently Mr. Bianchi, being relatively new to the community has not yet realized that most people in San Benito County do not look favorably on negative campaigning. Scagliotti provides the needed knowledge and understanding By Web and Birgit Winans ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 16, 2000, Page A4, Letters To The Editor It is with a great deal of interest that we are reading the pros and cons concerning the District One Supervisorial Race. We have lived in San Benito County for 34 years and have observed Richard Scagliotti in action on the board for the past 10 years. Following are some of his qualifications that we have seen demonstrated. Election time brings out best and worst in people By Richard Scagliotti - District 1 Incumbent ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 9, 2000, Page A4, Community Forum As citizens of this community, I'm sure some of you are amused and maybe even amazed at the debate that is playing out through the letters to the editor, editorial columns and in Community Forum columns in the Free Lance. Elections are in interesting time and have a tendency to bring out the best and worst in people - there is no middle ground. Don't find me guilty by involuntary association By Gidget Crisafulli - District 1 Challenger ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 4, 2000, Page A5, Letters To The Editor I read with interest Mark Paxton's comments in his January 28th column where he states that serious talk is needed on issues in this political campaign. I do agree with Mr. Paxton that our time is best spent talking about genuine solutions to the challenges facing our community. However, in that same article Mr. Paxton describes writers of several letters to the editor critical of the incumbent's record as zealots out to "help" my candidacy for County Supervisor in District 1. I have many supporters, some known to me and some not known to me, some willing to support me publicly, and some apprehensive to do so. My supporters, along with my detractors, are free to write whatever they choose. I do not control them. Don't be fooled by this Chameleon politician By Robert (Bob) Bianchi - CPA and treasurer for the Gidget Crisafulli for Supervisor Committee ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 4, 2000, Page A5, Community Forum Mark Paxton's usually excellent nose for politics failed him in his column in last Friday's Freelance. Mark's family's involvement with the county planning department has definitely hidden the whole story. Perhaps when you are too close and smell something for too long it loses its odor. (Mark Paxton's weekly column) By Mark Paxton - former editor of the Free Lance ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 4, 2000, Page A5 The reaction to my mention last week that there's a not-so-secret campaign to trash Supervisor Richard Scagliotti was fascinating. There wasn't exactly a line at the door, but about a half-dozen people who pay attention to county government said they'd made the same connection. Public officials are not always out for notice By Marley Holte - Holte Holiday Dinners ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, February 2, 2000, Page A4, Letters To The Editor As most of you know I sponsor the community dinners at Thanksgiving and Christmas time. But I don't do these projects alone. It has been my honor and privilege to meet many wonderful people in our community through these dinners, both volunteers and participants alike. Serious talk needed on issues By Mark Paxton - former editor of the Free Lance ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, January 28, 2000, Page A5 But lately, there are a few things that just seem so obviously outrageous that I can't be the only one thinking about them. The first is what seems to me to be an obvious campaign to distort the record and accomplishments of District 1 Supervisor Richard Scagliotti. Scagliotti hasn't always attached a great deal of value to his public record. Scagliotti's view on business is about long-term interest for SBC By Frank L. Christensen - President, Christen Industries, Inc. ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, January 26, 2000, Page A4, Letters To The Editor I recently learned from a Hollister friend that Supervisor Richard Scagliotti has been criticized in your newspaper and is being called an anti-business proponent because of his efforts to manage growth in San Benito County. I am compelled to comment on this. Ask yourself what this official has done for seniors By E.W. Newland ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, January 24, 2000, Page A4, Letters To The Editor If you are a senior citizen and live in Supervisorial District One, consider your vote carefully this year. Richard Scagliotti has been in office for 12 long years and hasn't learned a thing about the needs of our senior citizens. Voters in district one are smart enough to know they are being manipulated By Sergio Diaz ![]() ![]() Source: Hollister Free Lance, January 21, 2000, Page A4, Letters To The Editor Some hypocrisy is so blatant it has to be exposed - especially during election season when self-serving statements are elevated to an art form. The people of San Benito County need to be informed.
