![]() Political Forum Notes The San Benito County Chamber of Commerce and San Benito County Farm Bureau sponsored a Political Forum on Wednesday, February 23, 2000 at the City Hall in Hollister. The Forum featured most candidates for local political office. Gidget's opening and closing remarks are included here along with notes on possible issues. Political Forum Opening Remarks Good Evening, I'm Roseline Gidget Crisafulli, candidate for San Benito County Supervisor for District One. I'd like to thank the sponsors for organizing the forum this evening. It is important for our citizens to have the opportunity to hear from the various candidates and see the choices they have on March 7th. As we look at the future, we realize that San Benito County is changing at a rapid pace. I believe that the Board of Supervisors needs to keep pace with the times and demonstrate leadership. I believe that this leadership can best be demonstrated focusing on three very important areas:
Quality of Education, and Quality of Planning. Quality of EDUCATION means an increase in literacy and competency, access to new technologies for all ages, and standards in teaching and learning. Quality of PLANNING means well planned and managed communities, and a balance between ag, community values, new homes, businesses and technology. I believe in San Benito County. I want the job, I can do the job, and I need your support. Thank you. Political Forum Closing Remarks Let me say again, that I believe in San Benito County and its future. To have a successful future we must have a clear shared vision and plan. The time has come to form a community-wide team to develop this vision for the county for the next twenty-five years. Let's preserve our quality of life, education, and planning while creating a vibrant economic community. I will LISTEN to you. If you call me, I'll return your call. I believe in San Benito County. I am the right person for this job. I want the job, I can do the job, and I need your support. Thank you. Growth Issue Notes Growth is a major concern for all of us. As I stated, quality of life, education, and planning are my three focus areas. Growth will come, we must not try to hide our heads in the sand, but plan and manage growth effectively so that our citizens benefit from added resources, revenues, and services. What do I mean by that? We must build an infrastructure that ensures services, safety, and products. We must consider a partnership with high tech environmentally sound businesses and organizations for our own economic growth for a sustainable high quality of life. Roads Issue Notes (Major issue in the District) I've already stated that growth is a major concern in District 1 and the County. Another related concern is that our roads cannot safely support the number of vehicles that travel in and out of the County daily. Growth has occurred without the proper infrastructure. We can not allow that to continue. We must provide for a better quality of life and better safety. This is an important issue for me and is part of a larger issue of proper planning. We must look at the big picture and plan for the future. Water Issue Notes Quality of water, water containment, and water treatment are issues that must be addressed. A water treatment plant is not a future flight into fantasy, but a mandatory reality. We can not ignore the fact that we have grown. Even in a good year, we can not sustain our ag or residential base without proper water management. Revenue Issue Notes (Crime/safety) How will we support the necessary infrastructure? We must actively recruit new businesses to San Benito County to increase our tax base. At present, our new homeowners commute out of San Benito County. While we may collect property taxes, they are working in businesses paying taxes in other counties, they are shopping in other counties, and we are losing revenues.
